Whenever possible, we prefer to receive your advertisement as an Adobe Acrobat PDF file, via e-mail or our FTP server.
Note that PDFs must have fonts embedded, and all graphics within the original layout must be in either grayscale or CMYK color mode. Files containing RGB or LAB color files may be rejected by our printer, or cause other printing problems or delays.
Please contact your account executive for the appropriate e-mail address. In an emergency, materials can always be submitted to design@theonion.com, but please clearly indicate the name of your business and which Onion market your advertisement is intended for (New York, Chicago, Denver, etc.) so our production staff can make sure it arrives at the appropriate location.
FTP server for all Onion markets:
Server: madison.theonion.com

Upload your files into the "Public" folder. Please contact your account executive after uploading so we can verify file integrity.
If you need to submit your files in a format other than PDF, please use the following guidelines:
Macintosh:
Adobe InDesign CS2 or lower,
QuarkXPress 4.11 or lower,
Adobe Illustrator CS2 or lower,
Adobe Photoshop CS2 or lower,
TIFF, JPEG images (300 dpi, sized to fit),
Generic or Illustrator EPS.
PC:
TIFF or JPEG images (300 dpi, sized to fit),
Generic or Illustrator EPS.
Note that if you intend to submit your file in Illustrator or EPS format, all fonts must be converted to paths or we will be unable to use your file.
If you need to submit your files via mail, we accept CD and DVD media in Windows or Macintosh formats.
If you must submit camera-ready copy, note that every ad submitted solely on paper is scanned into the computer before placement in the layout. Be aware that scanning computer printouts with halftones often produces poor images (moiré patterns, muddy greys, sharp lines becoming fuzzy, etc.) This is why we always recommend submitting digital files rather than computer printouts or photocopies. Please note that The Onion cannot process film separations. If your ad is in color, please submit it as a digital file.
Note that routine production is provided free for contracted advertisers. Your account executive is happy to help you work with our design team to produce a high quality campaign for your business or organization.
Special placement requires a 20% surcharge.
All placement requests are given full consideration, but placement absolutely cannot be guaranteed without payment of surcharge. The Onion is not liable for failure to accommodate placement requests unless the advertiser chooses to pay the special placement surcharge.

The Onion is not responsible for typographical errors unless such an error was made by The Onion’s production staff. The Onion will only be responsible for returning charge on the portion of the advertisement that was rendered useless.
If a mistake in advertising occurs and is the fault of the publisher, remedies will be limited to whichever of the following options is appropriate:
a) cancellation or reduction of relevant production charges.
b) insertion of a “make-good” advertisement in the next available issue.
c) cancellation of charges for the portion of the advertisement rendered valueless by the error.
The publisher will assume no other responsibility for mistakes and the advertiser expressly agrees that a contract or insertion order shall not be invalidated by mistakes.
Payment in advance is required for all new advertisers, all advertisers who have not established credit with The Onion, all political advertisements, all transient advertisements, and all short-term event advertisements. Credit may be established with prepayment of first four (4) advertisements in a scheduled campaign. Once credit has been established, advertiser will be billed upon publication.
In the event of nonpayment, The Onion reserves the right to hold advertiser and/or its advertising agency jointly and severally liable for such moneys as are due to The Onion. Advertiser and/or agency agrees to reimburse The Onion for court costs, attorney fees, and any other expenses incurred in the process of collecting debts due The Onion. Payment is due upon receipt of billing. An account balance older than 30 days is considered past due. A monthly finance charge of 1.5% will be added to all bills after 30 days (annual interest rate 18%). No advertising will be accepted for accounts 60 days past due.
Advertising contracts must be fulfilled within one year from the first insertion. Frequency discounts are for contracted advertisers only and are not retroactive or transferable.
A “short-rate” billing will occur if a contracted advertiser does not complete a contracted frequency schedule. At that point, insertions that have been published at the contract rate will be recalculated at the frequency rate that has been earned, and the difference will be billed to the advertiser. The Onion reserves the right to run contracted ads over again if not notified of copy changes, and to bill the advertiser accordingly.
All rates are NET to The Onion.
Advertisements are accepted upon the representation that advertiser and agency have the right to authorize publication of the contents thereof. In consideration of such publication, advertiser and agency agree to indemnify, defend, and hold publisher harmless against expense, claim, or loss arising out of publication.
Publisher reserves the unrestricted right to reject any advertisement at any time with full reimbursement being made; furthermore, publisher shall not be liable for any costs or damages if for any reason it fails to publish an advertisement.
Advertiser agrees that all copy, layout, and composition of Onion advertisements and content are the sole property of Onion, Inc., and may not be reproduced without the express written permission of Onion, Inc.
The Onion will not be bound by conditions printed or appearing on order blanks, copy instructions, or verbal agreements that conflict with the provisions of this rate card.
All advertisements will be reviewed by The Onion and are subject to approval before placement on the site.
Advertisements cannot resemble Onion content in design or tone.
Advertisements cannot mislead the user. For example, they may not mimic or resemble Windows/Mac/Unix dialogue boxes, error messages, or the like.
The Onion reserves the right to preserve the user experience of its sites, and reserves the right to remove any advertisement that is deemed annoying and/or harmful to our users at any time.
